Back in school in the late 70's for a while around 1979 there was a proper sense of mods versus rockers and I was on the All Mod Cons side of the fence whilst a lot of the 'other side' seem to walk round with long greasy hair, wearing army surplus yellow rucksaks with Hawkwind written on them in felt pen. They also stunk of Petuli Oil and I remember one of their favourite pastimes was to try and get into the cloakrooms and spray the mods' parkas with Petuli. Sort of like modern day skunks.
Thirty years on and I'm photographing Hawkwind, the crowd probably has a few old school rivals within and I'm still on the All Mod Cons side of the fence. However, leaving aside the fact that it's still not my cup of tea, I well enjoyed photographing them especially when I looked up to see someone weilding a scythe over my head and looking like Eminem in a wig. On top of that, alhtough the lights weren't exactly photographer friendly at times, they did make a nice change and a bit of psychedelic lighting never did anyone any harm plus the fact that a band using a Theremin is always a nice touch and it's probably the first time in my life I've ever got to photograph one of them walk around guitar like synth contraptions that Howard Jones used to use in the 80's.
