It's the sound

Last night saw the launch of Liverpool Music Week at Carling Academy with New Young Pony Club supported by Soft Toy Emergency and The Delta Fiasco.   Not associated with Music Week but playing in Carling Academy 2 on the same night were The Draytones who were absolutely amazing and well worth checking out. They're on 1965 Records, at times sound like The Pretty Things circa 1965 and I took  exactly 65 photographs of them last night.  They're my new favourite band, it was meant to be! In order here are Soft Toy Emergency, The Draytones and New Young Pony Club.

Liverpool Music Week

Today I've been working on my book ' Capital Of Pop Culture' which comes out next year. It starts off with The La's at Liverpool's Earthbeat Festival in the summer of 1987 and finishes with Liverpool Music Week which kicks off in about 2 hours time with New Young Pony Club at Carling Academy. That's the general idea but then after Music Week comes Ocean Colour Scene, Deltasonic's Christmas party, Icicle Works and 3 Coral gigs where they're supported by the likes of The Twang, The View, Twisted Wheel, Duffy and Shack. So they'll probably end up in the book as well. Here's a photograph of The Rascals who play Bumper on Sunday night and Carling Academy on December 6th.

Queens Of The Stoneage

First 3 songs no flash, we all know that by now. Well, except for the security who chucked us out after 2 songs 'cos they can't count! I know all that loud rock music sounds the same but... This is Queens Of The Stoneage at Liverpool's Carling Academy, on Saturday, and possibly the loudest gig I've ever been to.

Contax moment

Although I use digital for just about 100% of my work, I still like to shoot film (on a Contax G1) from time to time. It all now seems such a slow process but often worth it for the depth of colour and also the fact that you
have to wait for the film to be developed. I spent a weekend in Amsterdam Last month and purposely didn't get the film processed until a month later so that I'd mostly forgotten what I'd shot so getting the photographs back would have an element of excitement again. The downside, however, is that I'm now going to have to scan them before I can put them online and that's probably gonna take ages. This is a Contax G1 image shot on print film and it was taken about 2 years ago in Scarborough.

Radio Radio

After spending 2 days up St.John's Beacon, photographing various radio presenters for Radio City's new City Talk station, I spent most of yesterday recording a 15 minute photography programme for Radio 4 to go out in the new year at the launch of the Capital of Culture year. The idea was to talk to me about my work and how Liverpool's changing and then talk to some of the people I work with. Matt from Black & Ginger came along and we got to do some recording in E Chambre Hardman's house and at the top of The Anglican Cathedral so it felt more like a photography themed day out than work. I did take a couple of photographs whilst wandering around but they were on film so you can't seem them. This image is not relevant in any way but I just wanted to put a photo up. It was taken in Rhyl a couple of months ago.

Someday

Here's another post from the Back To The Old Pool party at the Carling Academy in Liverpool a week ago. For this one, I was onstage whilst Ce Ce Rogers was in the pit singing Someday to an ecstatic crowd.

Licensed To Ill

This was taken, in a Welsh mining museum of all places, in about 1986 which is when the Beastie Boys first album came out and everyone was nicking the badges off VW's. I don't who the kids are.

Seasick Steve

This week I photographed lots of brochures in the studio, did a portrait in the print room of the Echo, did a Christmas card shoot for a restaurant chain, photographed some hampers, did a magazine cover portrait with football manager Bryan Robson and did these photographs of Seasick Steve at Carling Academy. I've also been spending a lot of time working on the book and then spent 12 hours trying to reinstall Lightroom after a major crash.
